Correct fluid capacity for 4L80E

I'm driving a '98 Chevrolet K3500 with 454 engine and 4L80E transmission. This truck always gets its fair share of snow plowing duty in the winter.. and even more this year!

Here's my concern.. I've been following the specified fluid capacity, approximately 7.7 quarts for fluid and filter change. So I drained the pan, dropped the filter, replaced it all, then added the fresh fluid.

I took it a for a 20-minute drive to warm it up and tried all the gears. After returning to the garage, I was surprised to see that the fluid level was a solid two inches above the hot full mark! I was confused and did everything again to check a few more time. To get to the point, the fluid level always went above! I had to drain out a good 3 quarts before hitting the target.

Anyone here using their trucks on snow plowing duty and have the same issue? Are you guys getting the full 7.7 quarts in there or do I get this information wrong?

That's real weird, man. I've got a similar setup, and 7.7 quarts should be right if you're just dropping the pan and filter. are you sure all the old fluid drained out? sometimes there's still a good bit left in the cooler or lines. Maybe try checking the level after running it through all the gears a few times? could also be a dipstick issue, some of these trucks aren't always 100% accurate.

You're hitting a super common point: the 7.7 quarts capacity is deceiving. That number is usually for a full system flush, not just dropping the pan. When you only drain the pan, a bunch of fluid stays in the torque converter and cooler lines.

So no, you don't get the full 7.7 quarts in there with just a pan drop. Having to drain out 3 quarts extra is totally normal to hit the correct hot full mark. You figured it out!

It's a common mistake, so don't worry too much about it unless you drive it overfilled. The specified capacity includes the transmission lines, cooler and I think the torque converter as well. Unless you disassemble the entire tranny and clean it, you'll never get out more than 4 to 5 quarts of fluid.
